St. George’s Lutheran Church

A Lutheran spiritual and cultural centre in the heart of London

History

St George’s German Lutheran Church is the oldest surviving German church in Britain. The congregation was established in 1762, and the church building was consecrated in 1763 to serve London’s growing German-speaking population in the East End. The church became a spiritual and social centre for generations of German-speaking Lutherans. The building reflects this history; its interior, with box pews and galleries, recalls eighteenth-century Lutheran worship.

The church is also home to a historic organ, built in 1886 and rebuilt in 1937 by the Walcker family. In 2004, the organ was restored by Bishops and Son.

Over time, the character of the surrounding area changed, and the German-speaking population declined. Regular worship eventually came to an end in 1996, after which the building was managed by the Historic Chapels Trust, which ensured its preservation as a place of architectural and historical significance.

In November 2025, St George’s entered a new phase when it was acquired by the Council of Lutheran Churches as part of the closure process of the Historic Chapels Trust. This marks not simply a continuation of its past, but a renewal of its original purpose – as a living Lutheran church in London.

The CLC is committed to revitalising St George’s, firstly for the benefit of congregations and worshipping groups that do not have their own permanent venue in London. In this way, the church becomes a shared home where different Lutheran traditions, languages and communities can gather for worship and fellowship.

Additionally, there is a recognition of the activities which have shaped the church’s recent life. The Friends of St George’s, together with former congregations and partners, have sustained a valuable offering of monthly lectures, organ vespers and special events, and the CLC intends to support and expand on these programmes as well.

Together, these strands – worship, heritage, music and community life – are shaping St George’s into a Lutheran spiritual and cultural centre in central London.
