When the CLC was founded in 1948 to support the ministry of tens of thousands of Lutheran refugees coming to the UK after World War II, we relied on donations from the worldwide Lutheran community to carry out our work. We are very fortunate to now be in a position to give back, helping ministries in the UK and elsewhere, in the form of an annual £10,000 designated donation.
The 2026 recipient of this grant will be The Lutheran World Federation’s Communion Solidarity Fund, which enables its member churches to help each other in providing rapid short-term response during unforeseen events. For example, last year the Fund enabled the following efforts:
+ In Ethiopia, following religious violence that destroyed homes and a church in Gatira, the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus supported affected families and rebuilt a temporary worship space, helping restore both daily life and community cohesion.
+ In Nigeria, after severe flooding in Yola, the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria assisted the most vulnerable people with essential household items such as blankets, mosquito nets and hygiene kits, alongside hygiene awareness activities to reduce health risks.
+ In Indonesia, after floods and landslides in North Sumatera, the CSF supported five churches to provide immediate relief, supporting access to food, shelter and basic supplies while helping communities to stabilise and recover.
Concerning this year’s donation recipient, CLC General Secretary Rev. Meelis Süld says, ‘I am very proud of the Communion Solidarity Fund’s mission and ability to work through member churches and trusted partners to deliver help quickly when the need arises, and I am glad that our donation can be part of this, helping to make the world a bit better.’
